The Importance of Stretching and Maintaining Flexibility

Stretching is so often overlooked that we at Best Massage International wanted to discuss this integral part of a complete spinal care program. We stretch to improve our flexibility and this improved flexibility has been shown to significantly reduce back pain. Flexibility is the range of motion that is available to a joint or group of joints. As it improves muscle balance around a joint, it thereby improves posture.

Whether you are a professional athlete or simply enjoy friendly recreational competition, stretching aides in reducing the risk of injury when playing a sport or in simple every day activities.
Of course, stretching should be part of your massage therapy as well. We can go only so far stretching on our own, but having a qualified professional assist us in our stretching will help us go much further in achieving greater flexibility and overall health. When receiving your next massage, ask your massage practitioner to employ stretching techniques as part of your massage therapy. This will create a stronger sense of balance in increase the blood and nutrient supply to muscles and cartilage, helping reduce muscle soreness.
